BARIATRIC SURGERY

What is it?

Bariatric surgery encompasses two types of surgical procedures. Gastric Bypass will shrink the stomach size itself, whereas Laparoscopic Gastric Band surgery cinches the stomach, ensuring it feels full with a lesser amount of food.

Frequency

In 2013, it was reported that as many as 179,000 bariatric surgeries took place in the United States. This is in conjunction with America’s growing obesity problem, which estimates that nearly 43% of Americans will be classified as obese by 2018.

Can I still have Whey Protein if i’ve undergone Bariatric Surgery?

This depends on the type of product you’re consuming. Most bariatric patients are on a “low ash” regimen, which means they have to be conscious of the mineral intake, most notable phosphorus and potassium. Most whey protein isolate products will have very low potassium and phosphorus levels, but be sure to read and understand the label. As always, ask your healthcare professional about specific products before consuming.
